Children playing tug-o-war at a YMCA summer camp

YMCA summer camps and programs offer an incredible opportunity for children to engage in exciting activities and make lifelong memories!

Whether you're a first-time camper or a seasoned veteran, proper packing is essential to ensure a comfortable and fun experience. To help you make the most of your child’s time at camp, we've put together the ultimate packing guide.

From essential items to camp-specific needs, read on to discover what things to pack for a YMCA summer camp!

Daily Basics

Backpack, shoes, and other basics you should pack for a YMCA summer camp

While every YMCA summer camp and program has its own requirements, there are a few essentials you should always remember to pack—regardless of the camp your child is attending.

Proper Clothing and Shoes

Comfortable and weather-appropriate clothing is essential for day camps. Before sending your child off for a day of fun, consider the camp's activities and weather conditions and plan accordingly to ensure they are wearing (or bringing) the proper clothing.

Some YMCA summer camps involve swimming, so you’ll also need to consider packing or wearing a swimsuit and water-resistant shoes.

Water Bottle

No matter what camp or activities your child is participating in, it’s essential to stay hydrated! It’s always recommended that you pack a reusable water bottle your child can refill at water fountains and water bottle filling stations throughout the day.

You can even fill your water bottle with ice before heading to camp to keep things nice and cool as the day goes on!

Sunscreen

Most of our fun summer camp activities take place outside—so it’s important to protect your child's skin from harmful UV rays. Pack a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF rating to apply before the camp day begins. Encourage your child to reapply sunscreen regularly, especially if water activities are involved.

Lunch and Snacks

With how active YMCA summer camps can be, your child will work up an appetite! Be sure to pack a nutritious lunch and a few snacks to keep your child going throughout the day.

Backpack

Using a backpack is the easiest way to keep your child’s things organized and in one place—ensuring that nothing gets lost or confused with other campers’ things!
