Must possess the ability to supervise, organize, and manage a youth sports program; possess strong communication skills; able to interact well with children; able to think and make decisions; prevent problem situations before they happen; hold a basic knowledge of the sport; and help members feel connected to the Y family. Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Sports Coordinator and in accordance with the Christian nature and policies of the Lafayette Family YMCA, the Youth Sports Instructor is responsible for the coordination of all youth sports programs including administration, planning, daily set-up, instruction and program evaluation, contributing to the establishment of good relations between parents, participants, volunteers, and the YMCA staff.


Responsibilities:

Serving the member is our first priority, the purpose of our work, and the key to our success!

  • Be present at ALL games and practices throughout the season.
  • Monitor gymnasium on a regular basis to ensure safety and privacy of youth sports participants.
  • Meet on a weekly basis with the Sports Director regarding status and direction of youth sports programs.
  • Maintain equipment on a daily basis, ensuring adequate inventory and well-organized storage areas.
  • Responsible for instruction and officiating of YMCA youth sports programs.
  • Assist in coordinating off-site and on-site youth sports programs through the week and on Saturdays as needed.
  • Sort and distribute T-shirts, awards, and program handbooks as needed.
  • Attend coaches, players, and parents meetings, assisting with set-up and presentation materials.
  • Distribute and collect evaluation forms for youth sports programs.
  • Ensure that Christian principles are being practiced and modeled in all programs.
  • Realize that all employees are held responsible for their duties on the job.
  • Set up equipment before each game/practice in a timely manor (at least 15 minutes before start time) and store equipment in proper place after last game.
  • Respond to any injuries and follow first aid and emergency procedures. Always fill out an accident report and report incident to a Professional staff person.
  • Attend new staff orientation, CPR and First Aid training within first three (3) months of employment and maintain necessary certifications as needed.
  • Must find OWN SUB in advance and turn into Sports Coordinator for approval.
  • Must wear a YMCA shirt and/or referee jersey and nametag during shift. Keep a neat appearance with shirt tucked in.

Each Youth Sports employee will be allowed only one write-up per year. Two write-ups will result in dismissal. Write-ups will be given for:

  • Being late for shifts
  • Failure to comply with job description
  • Failure to perform job satisfactorily

Grounds for dismissal:

  • Not showing for a shift, or scheduled staff meeting without prior excused notice
  • Insubordination to immediate supervisor or any other Director of the YMCA

POSITION: Wellness Coach


REPORTS TO: Healthy Living Director


KNOW HOW: Position requires a sensitive, patient, and conscientious leader with excellent knowledge in the areas of health and fitness. This position requires the ability and desire to work with the diverse needs of the inactive market. This individual must possess a professional image and ability to provide positive feedback, motivation, and encouragement.

Individual must possess strong communication skills; able to understand the benefits of exercise and weight training; able to think and make decisions; prevent problem situations before they happen; and help members feel connected to the Y family. Must have positive caring attitude and be able to implement YMCA mission statement and character development philosophy (i.e.; caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility) into the weight room. Minimum high school education is required.


GENERAL FUNCTIONS: To provide a safe, clean, and friendly weight training facility. Provide a well maintained and operating facility with the utmost standards in mind. Must remain in the fitness area and serve our members. Be able to communicate with and assist members with all equipment and personal goals. To facilitate the Personal Fitness Program to the best of his/her ability by providing personalized attention, support, and motivation. Through this individual’s performance, YMCA member involvement and retention will excel.


TRAINING: Possess current CPR and first aid certification (within first 3 months of employment). Complete the new staff orientation training within the first 3 months of employment.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

Member Relations

  • Warmly and enthusiastically greet members with a smile and eye contact. Be aware of members’ needs and make an effort to approach them before they approach you. Anticipate their needs.
  • Personalize relationships with members by introducing yourself and asking the name of each member with whom you come into contact. Make a point of remembering member names and use them frequently. When the opportunity arises, introduce members to other members or to fellow staff.
  • Understand and be able to discuss and promote all YMCA programs.
  • Call members to remind them of their upcoming fitness appointments.
  • Contact members on a regular basis to follow up on the progression of their fitness programs.
  • Be flexible and adaptable in order to accommodate members’ needs and wants.
  • Be able to answer members’ questions, concerns, and complaints in a timely and courteous manner.
  • Be able to effectively problem solve, taking full responsibility to remedy the situation and follow through to its completion.
  • Always convey a positive attitude when interacting with members or in the presence of members. Negative comments of any kind are inappropriate. Personal frustrations should be discussed with the Health and Fitness Director.
  • Be able to work as a team member, assisting fellow staff when necessary.
  • Make helpful suggestions as you identify members who may be using unsafe or ineffective techniques. Your feedback and attention is appreciated in most circumstances.
  • Make yourself available to all members regardless of age, gender, race, socioeconomic status, or fitness level. Share your knowledge and be a resource for health and fitness information.
  • Provide members with opportunities that will increase their involvement, sense of belonging, and sense of ownership of the YMCA.

Program Management

  • Understand the components and principles of fitness and be able to discuss them with members in layman’s terms.
  • Be available at all times to assist members and answer questions.
  • Emphasize safety and proper technique. Effectively provide instruction on how to utilize all fitness equipment. Motivate members to commit to long-term participation.
  • Consistently follow up with members you train by monitoring their participation, involvement, and exercise programs. Retention rate is to be at or above 70 percent.

Maintenance

  • Regularly check all equipment to ensure proper maintenance cleanliness.
  • Report equipment in need of repair to supervisor immediately and post “out of order” sign on equipment.
  • Do not post handwritten signs.
  • Take responsibility to keep all work areas clean and organized.
  • Clean all machines regularly; vacuum if necessary.
  • Re-rack all free weights as needed.

Safety

  • Understand, abide by, and enforce YMCA policies and procedures. Positively explain and interpret policies to members.
  • Be familiar with emergency procedures. Respond promptly and appropriately.
  • Abide by the safety, injury, illness, and prevention guidelines by taking personal responsibility for your safety and the safety of your program participants.

General

  • Maintain good attendance. Give supervisor 2-week notice on expected absences or requested time off.
  • Assume full responsibility for assigned shifts.
  • Be responsible for locating a sub for your shift. Must notify supervisor.
  • Clock in for assigned duty no more than five minutes prior to shift or five minutes after shift.
  • Arrive for assigned shift well groomed and in proper uniform. Staff T-shirt clean, tucked in; no tights, no hats, no heavy perfume or cologne, nor excessive jewelry.
  • Attendance at staff meetings is mandatory.
  • Products or services that are not a part of the YMCA program(s) shall not be promoted or endorsed by any employee to any member or guest whether the employee is “on the clock” or not.

We are looking for Lead and Assistant Lead Counselors in our Before & After School Childcare Program!



Pay: $8.50 - $11.25 per hour

This individual will provide a fun and positive experience to youth in our local schools while leading them through structured activities such as homework time, gym time, and fun social interaction.

Lead Counselor: Lead Counselor must be able to work Monday-Friday, 6:00am (7:00am at the schools) to 9:00am and/or 2:30p - 6p for Lafayette School Corporation schools and or 3:15p-6:00pm for Tippecanoe School Corporation schools.

Assistant Counselor: Assistant counselors help the leads at the schools and must work at least two shifts a week.

Responsibilities:

-Leading a group of children through a daily schedule that includes homework help, snack, gym time and fun activities

-Lead Counselor & Assistant Lead Counselor work together as a team to provide a positive and safe environment

-Counselors are responsible for daily attendance

-Communicate with the child care team

-Tracking and getting supplies for their on-site school

-Returning supplies and sign-in sheets to the YMCA

-Handling any behavioral problems with the children and communicating with the Director and parents.

Under the supervision of the Childcare Director and in accordance with the Lafayette Family YMCA core values and policies, the School-Age Bus Driver will be responsible for providing transportation to and from school for the children in the School-Age Childcare Program.


Requirements:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License
  • Cannot have more than two driving infractions in one year
  • Previous experience with children preferred

Responsibilities:

  • Transport children to or from school using a YMCA 15-passenger bus
  • Provide close supervision of the children on the bus and ensure that the children are following the YMCA bus rules
