Tis’ the season to spend time with family, friends, and food. We understand it can be difficult during the holidays to resist overindulging on the calories and missing out on the gym. Don’t be discouraged; we have some tips to help you stay fit during this holiday season without having to miss out on the festivities!
Have a workout buddy.
Staying motivated to go to the gym can be difficult when the temperatures begin to drop. Ask a trusted friend or a group of friends to go to the gym with you. You can hold one another accountable for working out, as well as staying motivated at the gym by encouraging each other. Your workout buddy can also check in on you during the holidays to make sure you’re not overindulging on food. Set goals and work on them together!
Try a new class.
Break the repetitive traditions this season and try a new class! We have a wide array of classes at the Lafayette Family YMCA. If you have been going to a particular class for a while, breaking out of your comfort zone and checking out a new class can strengthen muscle groups you haven’t been working lately. Your workout buddy can come too!
Maintain a food journal.
Another means of accountability for you this season is to maintain a food journal. This will be a really helpful guide for you while being around all of the delicious food. Before a party or get-together, write a plan of action regarding the foods you want to eat. By doing this, you can avoid overeating the unnecessary calories because the journal will a helpful reminder. If you find having a journal with you at all times feels difficult, download an app. There are a variety of food journaling and calorie counting apps that help you keep track of the food and calories you are eating.
Exercise portion control.
Along with keeping a food journal, portion control is crucial. Don’t be afraid to bring some measuring tools with you when you go to events with food. You can also use visual guides to determine how much you should eat. For more information, check out our previous blog post about portion control.
Remember calories can also come from liquids!
While we tend to focus on counting the calories in food, calories are also hidden inside those delicious holiday beverages. Yes, unfortunately even the delicious hot chocolate with whipped cream, punch, peppermint lattes, and cocktails can rack up the calories. When you’re at a holiday party that is serving drinks, keep in mind to limit yourself to one or two drinks. Having guidelines set in place before the event will help you avoid consuming the extra calories hidden in drinks.
You have worked hard to get yourself to this point and you can still maintain all of your hard work throughout the holidays. If this is your first time working to stay fit during the holidays, don’t hesitate to ask for help. Having a friend to go through this with you will help keep your mind on the big picture, which is personal health. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is difficult, but we’re all in this together. Enjoy this special time of year!
